Best Practices for Gig Drivers’ Transition to EVs
Gig drivers travel significantly more miles than the average driver. While EVs offer financial and environmental benefits, high upfront costs and financing challenges often stand in the way for these contract workers. Forth’s latest report highlights strategies to overcome these barriers and support gig drivers in making the transition to cleaner, more cost-effective transportation.

TNC Driver Studies
Forth gathers data on rideshare and delivery drivers in various cities and regions. As high-mileage drivers, they benefit greatly from lower fuel and maintenance costs with EVs, and the switch has an exponentially positive impact on reducing climate pollution.
Contact Forth Program Manager Ian Sergeant at electrifyrideshare@forthmobility.org for more information about the studies.
Seattle Transportation Network Companies Driver Study
Forth and the Port of Seattle are working together to help educate rideshare drivers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) about the benefits of EVs, with DC fast chargers coming to the SEA transportation network companies (TNC) staging lot in 2025.
Forth will survey SEA’s predominantly low-income, BIPOC and immigrant driver communities to ensure their specific needs are addressed in the EV transition. The Port of Seattle will provide translated materials in multiple languages to support accessibility and inclusivity for all drivers.
WestSmart Intermountain West Gig Driver EV Study
Forth surveyed and collected data on rideshare and delivery drivers in several major cities throughout the Intermountain West. The goal of this study is to measure the charging needs of Transport Network Companies (TNC) drivers in the transition to electrified transportation.
Cities included in the study are Portland, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Forth has gained interesting insights in the outreach and will begin the reporting phase of the study with the webinar "Key Findings from the WestSmart Gig Driver EV Study" on October 29, 2024. The Department of Energy-funded study is managed by Rocky Mountain Power. Forth has been a subrecipient of the grant.
